  • Darrell, Wow! What a great album of a great subject! Congratulations for having this awesome album featured today. I want to give you and others who are interested in the Amish a heads up regarding the largest population of Amish in the United States. I understand that Holmes County, Ohio, has approximately 17,000 Amish living in it. This area is located south of Cleveland and east, northeast of Columbus, Ohio. The Amish people I encountered there were extremely friendly to outsiders like myself, and the products they create are superb. I am an architect who believes that the Amish kitchen cabinets from a factory that I saw in the area is unsurpassed. All of their business is done by word of mouth and they do not even have a website. Because of my expressed interest in barn architecture, I was invited by an Amish farmer to observe an Amish Barn Raising. The photographs that I was extremely fortunate to obtain of this event can be found in my own album entitled "Amish and Amish Barn Raising". I hope you have an opportunity to visit it after you finish celebrating the honor bestowed upon you today. Thanks for sharing your album with the Webshots community. Bill Cable (heyburn3)

And to respect people's different ways of living. It's a huge world and there is plenty of room for all of us, no matter how we may differ from each other. Thanks for sharing your great pics, enjoyed my visit alot. Have a wonderful week, friendly greetings from Salla, Finland

  • Darrel, nice photos, but I was under the impression that the Amish do not like to have graven images made of themselves. When we travelled to Lancaster, PA in 1988, this is what we were told. I had this gorgeous photo lined up. A sunset shot with a carriage coming down the road--just perfect. But when the carriage got up to me, I remembered and dropped my camera to my side. The Amish man nodded an emphatic "thank you". It was better than getting the shot.

  • Hello Webshot Friends, Thanks to all of you that have looked at this album. Some interesting facts. Many of you have heard, that the Amish don't like their picture taken. This is true, but why? You can find the answer in the Bible. Look in the book of Deuteronomy. Note that you don't see a church picture. It is because, they use their homes. Look at picture number 5, that wagon is loaded with seating, they have church in their homes. Amish use horses and gas or diesel engines with a P.T.O. shaft and hydraulics to power some of their equipment. Note the modern haybine, powered by an engine, pulled by 4 draft horses. Note the grocery store, when I first went in, I noticed what looked much like fluorescent lights. But in truth, the lighting comes from the sun, shining on mirrors, that reflect a light that is bright enough to light up the store inside much like electric would. Note that the homes are close to each other, in some cases, they actually join. But why is that? It is so the younger ones can take care of their parents, when they become old and need assistance. So the Amish take care of each other, preparing the food, having a two night visitation when one dies. Taking care of all chores, preparing the food for the family of the deceased. If one family has a hardship financially, they all pitch in to have an auction, to raise money. We can learn a lot from the Amish, the world would be better off, doing as the Bible teaches in the Golden Rule. America could take some lessons from the Amish. The Golden Rule Matthew 7:12 12 “Do for others what you would like them to do for you. This is a summary of all that is taught in the law and the prophets. New Living Translation Thanks for looking, thanks to each one that has put in a comment in my guestbook. May God Bless... Darrell

  • Hi Darell....WOW!! I have sure missed a lot of friends special features this year...Fabulous look and Congratulations on this great album and I do admire their simple way of life Their wonderful patchwork is world famous and have seen some pieces years ago in Noosa. They are to be admired for their beliefs and I wouldn't mind the lack of electricity in my life. Things would be much more down to earth and full of more direct communication. A great album my friend and I enjoyed their view of life. Tks also for your kind words in my feature the other day as your uplifting words are always appreciated. Take care and have a really great day...Kindest regards. Em from Aussie

  • Hello Darrell, very hardy congratulations (belated) on your 1st Amish featured album. I missed this one when I praised your December featured album. So many people never add descriptions on their photos it’s a special joy to find another who does. Despite the 1000 words each picture conveys they never the less miss the details – like the hand cranked windshield wipers on their buggies (#6) and the church service seating wagon (#7). Thank you for sharing, and thanks for your comments on our "Albuquerque Sunsets - Featured 12/13/2005" album. I wish you a Merry Christmas this year and many, many photos into the future.
