  • Just checking to see how your recovery is going. I finished PT April/May. Reason for no more PT was lack of progress. I went to the ortho in May (one month overdue, but that is another story). The bottom line is the joint fusion is healing well (just a small gap left). NO motion in my thumb thumb. Verdict is adhesions on the tendon going over the hardware. So back under the knife on 7-27 to remove pins in my thumb and free up the tendon, and maybe a small bone graft if the fusion isn't complete. Week or so in the soft cast. Hope all is going well for you. I'll chat again after next surgery.

  • Looks like we had a similar surgery about the same time. I had a joint fusion in my MCP joint between Christmas and New Years 2006. Cast for a month, then PT. Still have ROM in in PIP joint in my thumb. Check out my pics. Hope your healing has gone better.

  • Hello Kristy, I know what you feel, exactly ten years ago I had my right thumbs first carpal metacarpal bone discarded as ortho surgeons wanted to fuse it....but due to O.A. and age the bone just exploded under the drill. So they cut my underarm up till elbow, toookt he tendon and rolle d it up to replace the bone....Hand never got functional, cant do many things, but...now left thumb takes over all the work and it would need surgery...I sufffered so much with the first...6 weeks cast till elbow...needed help to dress and bathe...as I live alone that wasnt easy:) But ...life goes by and all wouldns and hurts will end one day right? I envy you computer knowledge....as I am an illiterate computerer:( WIsh you speedy recovery and a better outcome than mine...Now I am off to check ur albums or part of it:)I will haev my January album up soon...Thank you soo much for your kind words and visit...Marra

  • 1/15/07 The hand therapy session today incorporated new procedures. My hand was placed in a cold whirlpool. This machine contained crushed corn husk, which felt like cornmeal. It swirled around my hand for 15 minutes. The grain did heat up a bit toward the end from the friction. I washed my hand and arm and then we did the cold laser treatment. This works at the mitochondrial cellular level to work with the body’s natural healing. It is supposed to keep bruising and swelling down. My therapist finished this treatment, washed the hand again. She then had me squeeze a sponge ball for five minutes to get my hand stronger. The final step this morning was an ice massage. Half of a Styrofoam cup had been filled with water and frozen. The ice was run all over my wrist and thumb. This is a great idea, as the Styrofoam kept her fingers from freezing. Ice massage is great for torn and sore tendons.

  • Suggestions and Tips for this type of Surgery: The day before your surgery, place an oven mit on your hand when you get up in the morning. Wrap a plastic garbage bag around your arm, to the elbow for your shower. Go through all of your normal routines in the morning. Sound odd, yes. BUT what it will do is give you a good overview of working without one hand for at least two weeks. You can adjust your space prior to your surgery. That giant post-op bandaging will just be in the way and make you klutzy. Forget about opening jars .. put drinks into fliptop pitchers in the fridge. I couldn't operate ziploc bags or crack eggs. You won't be able to open medication bottles, either. Wear a short sleeve top to the surgery center, as that bandage will not fit through the sleeves of anything. They will probably have your arm encased in a giant foam block. It will need to be upright for 72 hours after surgery for drainage and swelling. I also needed another painkiller when leaving the hospital, but the nurse said that if she gave me one, I would need to wait there for another half hour. Good reason to have the person picking you up, bring bottled water and a couple of Advil for you! The discomfort wasn't bad and I was suprised by that. The day after surgery was just spent shaking the anesthesia and I did take Vicodin. The next day, I only needed Advil and an occasional Vicodin at night. I also had a ganglion cyst removed from the first joint of my thumb, so I really had a challenge. My wrist is better, but I am still without a working opposable thumb! Elastic waist pants are a must. So is a big wide sleeve comfy bathrobe. Look at your closet and realize that anything with a zipper, button, hook, or snap will not be feasible for a couple of weeks. Good luck, hope this helps a little!

  • An update: I had the surgery a month ago and my first hand therapy session was yesterday. They took a lot of measurements. A week ago, the physical therapist molded a hard rubber splint around my thumb and wrist. This week, I managed to talk her into giving me a soft material splint called Comfort Cool. MUCH better. The joint/tendon still will need support for a few more weeks. I am able to touch my thumb to my middle finger. Doesn't sound like much, but it is good progress. All the typing really got my tendon moving and working.
