PANTHERA TIGRIS TIGER Distribution: Southern Asia and Eastern Asia. Food: Mostly deer, wild pigs and cattle, sometimes monkeys, birds, reptiles and fish. It can eat up to 6kg of meat per day. In extreme cases it has been a man ? eater. Data: The Tiger is the largest member of the cat family. It can weigh up to 260kgs. It is an excellent swimmer and can swim for up to 6 kms. Tigers once existed as far as Eastern Turkey, but are only found today in the coniferous woods of Siberia and the tropical forests of Southeast Asia. Tigers are usually solitary, but males sometimes rest and feed with a female and its cubs. The female gives birth to 2 or 3 cubs after a gestation period of 103 days. Life span is 15 years in the wild and up to 26 years in captivity. Although protected in most areas, tigers are still killed illegally, mainly for their skin and for use in traditional Chinese medicine. Five subspecies exist, all endangered.
