Found at Tanis. Carved from a single block of pink granite, this large statue depicts a pharaoh with a lion's body. This is a particularly fine specimen with a strong volumetric sense and finely executed detail. Several kings in turn inscribed their names on it. The oldest inscription reads Amenemhat II (1929-1985 BC) and possibly the sphinx was sculpted during his reign. However certain details (like the headdress) might suggest an earlier dating, to the beginning of the Old Kingdom around 2620 BC. If this were so, this would be a rare example of royal sculpture from that distant time.
