Album Info:

In 1849, a lighthouse was built on an islet just off the eastern end of Cockspur Island to mark the entrance to the south channel of the Savannah River. That lighthouse was short-lived, and this replacement was built on its oyster bed foundation in 1857. In 1909, the deep draft ships calling at Savannah started to used the north channel, and the Cockspur Lighthouse was deactivated. The tower was repaired in a two-stage restoration effort that lasted from 1995 to 2000. The Cockspur Lighthouse is now part of the Fort Pulaski National Monument between Tybee Island and Savannah, Georgia.
