The position of the ball head on the top board is a matter of compromise. It should be close to the hinge so that the torque on the tangent screw due to a mounted camera+lens is reduced. However, it should be farther away from the hinge so that we can find a 'balance' point to mount the entire contraption on a tripod. I arbitrarily chose to drill a 1/4" hole 4" from the hinge axis. In retrospect, I could have drilled this much closer to the hinge.
