The culmination of this Franciscan priest's heroic life of charity, missionary zeal, and self-sacrifice came when he was imprisoned in the Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz. There he continually inspired his fellow inmates by his bold confession of Christ and his example of charity even under these extreme conditions. Following the example of his heavenly Master he made the greatest sacrifice of all, volunteering to die in place of another prisoner.
