After mounting the camera with the lens on the ball head, I estimated that the 'balance' point for the tripod was ~3" from the hinge axis. This is very rough and there is no way to be accurate because the Centre of Gravity for the entire contraption will shift depending on the direction in which the camera is pointed. I drilled a 5/16" hole 3" away from the hinge on the bottom board for a 1/4" 20 tpi T-nut and then nailed it down with 1" nails. I used a Dremel 200 to trim the nail ends protruding from the bottom. This T-nut (on the left) is to mount the entire contraption onto a stable tripod.
