The Hawksbill Sea Turtle is a critically endangered species of sea turtle that can be found in the waters of the Maldives. They are named for their pointed beak-like mouth, which resembles that of a hawk. These turtles are known for their beautiful shells, which were historically used to make jewelry and other handicrafts. However, this has led to a significant decline in their population over the years. Hawksbill Sea Turtles feed primarily on sponges, which helps to maintain the health of coral reefs. They can be found in the shallow coastal waters and coral reefs of the Maldives, where they nest on sandy beaches. Conservation efforts are underway in the Maldives to protect the Hawksbill Sea Turtle and other marine species. This includes measures to reduce pollution, regulate fishing practices, and establish protected marine areas. Visitors to the Maldives can also contribute to conservation efforts by supporting eco-friendly tourism practices and avoiding the purchase of products made from sea turtle shells.
